Presentations of HIFIS at this Major Cross-Cutting Event
The IT4Science Days 2024, a joint meeting of the Max Planck Society, the Helmholtz Association, Fraunhofer and Leibniz, concluded end of September. Hosted at the Faßberg-Campus in Göttingen, this event brought together many actors from both organisations to discuss and explore the latest developments in the field of digital science.
After the 2023 edition of the meeting, it was the second time with several major contributions by the HIFIS team to illustrate and enhance collaboration:
Advancing Scientific Collaboration: Recent Developments and Progress in HIFIS — We showcased the overall achievements of HIFIS over the past few years. Our platform has expanded its support to new centers, research fields, use cases and external collaborations. We onboarded new scientific services, finalized the contracting process for Helmholtz Cloud services and extended our course program.
Fighting operational overhead: a developer’s perspective — We presented the case for applying DevOps practices to manage a service’s underlying infrastructure, using workload schedulers such as Kubernetes and infrastructure as code tools like Pulumi. This approach aims to streamline processes, reduce human intervention, and help understaffed IT departments.
Sharing resources across centers - resource requests in the Helmholtz Cloud — We demonstrated the Helmholtz Cloud’s solution to facilitate the sharing of digital resources across research centers. The solution combines a user-friendly interface with highly customizable resource requests, policies, quotas, and center-level integration points for providers.
Overall, our contributions strongly align with the recommendation put forward by the Science Council (Forschungsrat) to improve digital sovereignty in research, while maintaining autonomy and competence of IT departments.
