Philipp Neumann

Philipp Neumann (Uni-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil.) is the new HIFIS Coordinator. By taking over his role as Head of DESY’s IT department at the beginning of May 2024, he also became the spokesperson for the HIFIS platform. With his extensive experience in the HPC field, Neumann will significantly shape and further develop the future of HIFIS.

Neumann gained years of expertise in various leading positions. After studying Engineering Mathematics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, he completed his dissertation in 2013 at the Institute of Computer Science at Technical University of Munich on the topic “Hybrid Multiscale Simulation Approaches for Micro- and Nanoflows.” During a postdoctoral research phase and his work as scientific program manager for the DFG program “Software for Exascale Computing” (SPPEXA), he undertook two research stays at the Brazilian Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora and at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA.

From 2016 - 2019, Neumann worked at the German Climate Computing Center in Hamburg, and from 2017 - 2019 as a postdoctoral researcher in the scientific computing research group at Universität Hamburg. In 2019, he finished his habilitation on the topic “Algorithms and HPC Software for Molecular-Continuum Flow Simulation” at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). In the same year, Neumann accepted a call to the professorship for High Performance Computing at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Helmut Schmidt University.

Since May 2024, Neumann has been the new Head of IT at DESY, a position that includes the role as HIFIS Coordinator. His predecessor, Volker Gülzow, recently retired. Gülzow tirelessly initiated and significantly contributed to the establishment of the HIFIS platform, making it a success from the start.

Neumann’s start coincides with an important phase for the HIFIS platform, as the new funding period begins in 2025.

We wish Neumann much success in his new role and look forward to the impulses he will bring to the platform.
