HIFIS Helmholtz Federated IT Services, Digital Services for Science =E2=80=94 Collaboration made easy.
June 2026

Dear HIFIS Community and Friends,

While everyone is talking about AI integrations (and agents), we are actually getting our hands dirty with it. And yes, we’re doing it on our own infrastructure - on-site or within family (looking at you, Helmholtz Blablador).

Open interfaces are key for seamless integration, and authenticated workflows are absolutely essential - because security and credibility matter (surprise!). Free software and tools are the baseline for keeping costs predictable and making sure the taxpayer money is actually well spent. To be clear: “Free” meaning free as in freedom, not in free beer; good software costs good money. The good news: The know-how and the basic technical infrastructure already exist in Helmholtz and HIFIS - so let’s make them play nicely together. The bad news: No bad news today, sorry.

Bridging real-world use cases - especially from the health sector - with these hyped shiny new technological developments will be a hot topic at our HIFIS & Friends All-Hands Meeting, September 9–10, at DKFZ in Heidelberg. Plus, we’ll also have our eyes on creating cross-center content on our brand-new E-Learning platform - blended learning included.

If you’re a contact person from any of the platforms, the HIDS Framework, Software Development initiatives, the Open Science Office – or a HIFIS colleague who hasn’t signed up yet – we’d love to have you 👉️registered here!👈️

Until then, happy reading!

With best regards,

The HIFIS Team

Matrix, OpenProject, open edX: in this edition alone, you’ll encounter several open source projects that power services in the Helmholtz Cloud. This newsletter itself depends on more open source software than one could reasonably list.

With the EU Tech Sovereignty Package now published and open source recognised as one of the pillars of European digital sovereignty, the topic is hard to miss these days.
