HIFIS Helmholtz Federated IT Services, Digital Services for Science =E2=80=94 Collaboration made easy.
February 2025

Dear HIFIS Community and Friends,

For several years, the main focus under the umbrella of the HIFIS platform has been on activities to develop and offer scientific services, preferably in the cloud. This work is now producing visible results worldwide. The Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment has consistently followed this path with the Digital Earth project and there are now outstanding digital offerings that have also been integrated into the Helmholtz Cloud Platform, as you’ll see in this issue.

The success is also reflected on the helmholtz.software platform, as the approximately 400 software solutions offered there are now referenced around 50,000 times in journals, conferences, books or PhD theses, many of them over 1,000 times alone.

In the coming months, the 5 Helmholtz platforms will work together to give this fantastic development additional momentum, stay tuned!

Trusting the Federated Services

Imagine a future where instead of 18 duplicated instances of the same service, we have 3 or 4 across all Helmholtz centers? That’s our vision for HIFIS and it is becoming a reality, with HZB leading the way.

New Scientific Services Joined Helmholtz Cloud

A fruitful cooperation has been established between the DataHub of the research area Earth and Environment and HIFIS. DataHub services utilize HIFIS services, including Helmholtz ID for authentication and authorization, the Helmholtz Research Software Directory (RSD) and the Helmholtz Cloud for access to data infrastructure services. This partnership supports the professionalization of scientific services and enables open access.

Currently, eight services from DataHub are offered on the Helmholtz Cloud Portal and thus also in the “Tools & Services” section of the Earth Data Portal.

Refinement of Service Onboarding

Onboarding new services is a challenge for service providers, but it has become routine for the HIFIS team. The process described in detail here involves numerous tasks and requirements and often, the technical integration has to be customized to fit the service.

To optimize this process, the cloud teams critically and constructively discussed ways to improve the entire workflow. Numerous ideas were collected at the meeting in Jülich in September 2024.

Enhancing User Experience in Helmholtz ID

You might have noticed the need for duplicated multi-factor logins (MFA) when using Helmholtz ID for group management. If you already provided a second factor for your home organization’s account and your organisation transmits that information to Helmholtz ID, you will not be prompted to provide it again. This is now seamless for several Helmholtz Centers.
