How to Work With Threads

The New Helmholtz Matrix Service and this Documentation Are in a Ramp-up Phase

We plan to offer Helmholtz Matrix from April 2026.

  • Please contact us if you encounter any errors.
  • Helmholtz members are also invited to give us some structured feedback here.
  • From time to time, you may see a red “Offline” notification message. This is because during ramp-up phase of the service, we may need to deploy changes to the server without prior announcement. Don’t reload, your messages will be sent with few seconds delay.

General Considerations

Threads allow a structured discussion in a team on multiple topics. If not used (wisely), discussions can easily become messy when messages to multiple topics interchange. So this needs some discipline by the users. Room admins should consider to introduce some discussion rules.

Threads in Matrix

Matrix Element client allows two ways to respond to chat messages (mouse-over chat):

  • via direct reply
  • via reply in threads

To not miss any messages in threads, you can easily get overviews by clicking on the thread symbol (thread symbol in matrix)

  • on the bottom left (for all your chats)
  • on the top right (for just the current room)

All unread threads are marked with a bubble on the right side.

  • Green: you haven’t read anything here yet.
  • Black: you read some of it, but new posts have been added.

Don’t confuse with bubbles next to people’s names, signalling their availability status.
